The Derby Arts Council at the Derby Public Library

The goal of the Derby Arts Council is to encourage, promote and foster appreciation, participation and support for the visual arts. The Derby Arts Council will showcase local artists and provide an exhibition gallery for Derby and the surrounding area to enhance the cultural arts experience.

There are two gallery spaces in the library that are managed by the Derby Arts Council: the Gathering Space Gallery and the High Wall Gallery. The Gathering Space Gallery is in the library’s lobby and includes the Community Room. When art is on display in the Community Room, it may not be available for viewing at all times. The High Wall Gallery is inside the library, located in the Business/Genealogy area of the library.

Celebrate 40 years of Gallery XII artists at the library

A vibrant and varied collection of original art by 23 artists is on display in the Gathering Space Gallery at the Derby Public Library, celebrating Gallery XII’s 40th anniversary. Artists’ works include representations of different media, including watercolor, oils, pastels, photography, drawing and mixed media.

Aside from the range of media in the show, the art also covers a variety of art styles such as abstract, realism, traditional and contemporary. Viewers will find it difficult to choose a favorite work in the show, thanks to the artists’ many interpretations of nature, landscapes, still life and more.

A country road in Greenwood County, embellished seascape photographs, luminous forest paths that beckon the wanderer, even a green fish floating among paper lanterns await the viewer.

Gallery XII artist cooperative, the longest running in Kansas, gives its members the opportunity to exhibit and sell their work, but they are also responsible for assisting with duties at the gallery. Many of the artists are involved in other art activities in the community, and some are teachers.

An opening reception honoring the 23 artists who work is included in the exhibition will be held 6-7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10, in the Gathering Space Gallery. Many of the artists will be in attendance, as will Gallery XII director Tom Montgomery. Light refreshments will be served.

Many of the works in the show are available for purchase. Any questions regarding the purchase of art in the exhibit can be directed to Tami English at the Derby Public Library at 316-788-0760 or

The Moods of Winter

Now that there’s a chill in the morning air, the Derby Arts Council’s newest exhibit invites viewers to experience the “Moods of Winter” through art by 12 artists of the Kansas Art Guild. This new show is on display in the High Wall Gallery in the Derby Public Library.

The show offers a glimpse into the many moods of the season through the scenery and moments the winter months offer: a stroll along a snowy path, a winter nap, playful dogs wrapped in fleece against the cold. The images may evoke memories or daydreams for viewers.

The 15 featured works include oils, acrylics, watercolor and pastels, which will be on display through Jan. 2, 2018.

Members of the Kansas Art Guild meet on the first Wednesday of each month except November, at Mark Arts, formerly Wichita Center for the Arts.

Many of the works are available for purchase. For more information regarding any of the works, or to purchase a piece, please contact Tami English at 316-788-0760.
