Support the Library

As a center of our community, the library is grateful for the support it receives. If you would like to support the library, below are a few ways you can help.

Make a Donation or Memorial Gift

The Derby Public Library welcomes your donations, special occasion gifts, and memorial gifts. We will also accept donations of new or used books, DVDs, audiobooks, or music CDs.

Gifts and donations are accepted with the understanding that the library retains unconditional ownership of the donation, and will make the final decision on the materials’ acceptance, use, and disposition. Gifts and donations will be added to the collection if they meet the same criteria required of purchased materials. Gifts not meeting these standards may be sold, given to another library or organization, sold online, disposed of as trash, or recycled.

Gifts and donations will be integrated into the library collections in normal sequence, will be available to all library patrons, and will otherwise be handled as any other material belonging to the library, including the item withdrawal policy.

Materials the library refuses to accept includes, but is not limited to: textbooks, magazines, encyclopedias, series or sets of books that are older than 10 year of age (such as Reader’s Digest publications, Time-Life series, Childcraft, etc.), non-Derby school yearbooks, damaged items (including water damage, mold, mildew, yellowed pages, worn, musty, marked with handwriting or other markings, smoke smell, etc.), or items that have no sale potential.

Donations must be delivered to the library in boxes or bags that can be easily lifted and carried. A maximum of three bags or boxes can be accepted at any one time and no more than once a day.

A receipt is available upon request for the number and format of the items donated. Library staff is unable to appraise donations for tax purposes.

Join the Friends of the Library

Another way you can support the library is by joining the Friends of the Derby Public Library group. Friends support the library financially and with volunteers. The Friends host the annual book sale, help with Santa’s Village, and more.
