Kids and Families

Derby Public Library offers a myraid of programs and resources for kids and their families. Check out our programming options for babies, toddlers, preschoolers, and school age children. Many of our databases and learning resources are great for school projects or just kids and parents who want to learn about history, culture, geography, and current events.

Game On!
Game On!

Join us on the first Saturday of the month! We'll be playing new (and sometimes improved) versions of your favorite games, as well as the original games. We'll also have card games, board games, and D&D "Office Hours" with quick guides and character guides. And more! Bring a friend, bring a date, bring your family! Open to all ages.

1000 Books Before Kindergarten
1000 Books Before Kindergarten

By reading one book a night, you will ready 1000 books (repeats count) to your child in 3 years! This program is a fun way to help your child develop a love of books and reading while earning some great prizes.

Programs and Events for Children

At the Derby Public Library, we recognize how important literacy is to children's development. Our Youth Services staff is dedicated to providing programming and other opportunities to help children improve their literacy. We also offer programs that can assist parents as they seek to help their children develop literacy skills and learn to love reading.

The programs below are available at the times listed during fall and spring sessions. In the summer, we offer many other special programs as part of our summer reading program.

Early Literacy Programs

Baby Storytime
Baby Storytime

Baby Storytime is a 20-minute early literacy program designed for a parent or caregiver and their baby age birth to 12 months. Each week parents and caregivers and their babies will share board books, rhymes, bounces, and action songs that are consistent with infant development. It's never too early to work on early literacy skills. Baby Storytime meets on Thursdays at 10 a.m. in the Frank Fanning Conference Room during spring and fall sessions. No registration is required.

Toddler Time
Toddler Time

The perfect storytime for your 1-3 year old! Toddler Time is a 20-minute introduction to classic storytime elements, such as picture books, fingerplays, and music. Children and parents or caregivers are encouraged to engage with books, musical instruments, and flannel board stories. Toddler Time meets on Fridays at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. in the Frank Fanning Conference Room during spring and fall sessions. No registration is required.

Building Blocks Read & Play
Building Blocks Read & Play

Following the Montessori Method of education, this program adds to the traditional storytime format by providing space and accessible tools for self-directed play. Babies and toddlers will explore different shapes and textures, discover new ways to play, gain new skills, and learn to cooperate with others. Building Blocks Read & Play meets on Thursdays at 11 a.m. in the Frank Fanning Conference Room during spring and fall sessions. No registration is required.

Preschool Storytime
Preschool Storytime

Preschool Storytime is a 30-minute early literacy program for children ages 3-5. Read books, sing songs, learn finger plays, and enjoy puppet shows! An accompanying adult must remain on library premises and is encouraged to participate. Preschool Storytime meets on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10 a.m. in the Early Literacy Area of the library. No registration is required.

School-Age and Family Programs

Adventures @ the Library
Adventures @ the Library

Explore and discover all kids of things after school at the library with this literacy-based program for grades K-2. Program typically includes books read aloud, a craft, a short video, and snack time. Adventures takes place 4-5 p.m. on Thursdays.
Tween Zone
Tween Zone

Every Wednesday after school, we welcome our tweens in grades 3-5 to enjoy crafts, activities, games, snacks, and book talks. Come check out some new books! The Tween Zone programs are 4-5 p.m. on Wednesdays.
Family Night
Family Night

Family Night is designed for families with children ages 3 to 7, but all ages are welcome.  Come for a before bedtime sharing of books and music, followed by a family activity.  Family Night are held on the first Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m.
Slow Your Roll RPG Club
Slow Your Roll RPG Club

Are you a 5th through 8th grader interested in RPG (role-playing games) such as Dungeons & Dragons? Then join the Slow Your Roll RPG Club! Each week you will explore a different aspect of D&D with our resident game master. Build characters, learn battle strategy, and practice being a dungeon master yourself. In Fall 2024, our resident staff game master will lead three 4-week long campaigns. Register is required. Check out the library event calendar for more details.
