Get ready for a jam-packed teen summer at Derby Public Library! Stop by the Teen Scene area to game on the computers and hang out with friends. Join us for the summer-ized Teen Tuesday, get creative and make an original movie, or help solve a murder at the after-hours Teen Murder Mystery Night. And don't forget to sign up for the reading challenge to win prizes and an entry into a grand prize drawing! This summer, let's Unearth a Story!
Registration begins May 26 and the last day to turn in logs to redeem for prizes is Sunday, July 26 at 5 p.m.
Teen readers in grades 6-12 will read 12 hours to complete the challenge and earn prizes!
This summer's prizes include:
- A new book, fresh from Scholastic Publishing
- One Pass to Rock River Rapids
- One Coupon for a Pizza Hut Personal Pan pizza
- One Free Meal from Fazoli's
- An entry into the grand prize drawing to win one of two $100 Amazon Gift Cards

This summer's program theme is Stone Age Discoveries with each week exploring an invention of the cave era.

Inspired by cinematic staples like The Office, Abbott Elementary, and Parks and Recreation, this filmmaking workshop will guide teens through creating a mockumentary! Explore the Moviecraft Cinematic Universe to produce an original short film that takes inspiration from both the absence and presence of color. Writers, directors, actors, and tech nerds welcome! No previous participation required.
*This is a seven-week, 3-hour workshop that may require additional homework outside of class. Teens must attend at least four of the seven sessions.

Celebrate the work of our teen filmmakers by viewing this summer's short film, followed by a behind the scenes documentary and blooper reel. Meet the crew, get autographs, and enjoy the show! Refreshments will be served.
Teen Dinosaur Painting Party
Saturday, June 6 from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m.

6th – 12th graders are invited to join local artist Kim Peck in this painting party to create an 11X14 canvas of an adorable summer dinosaur on the beach. Teens will learn basic acrylic painting skills, basic brush sizes, and various painting techniques with customizable colors to make their own creation. Light refreshments and all materials provided.
Murder Mystery Night: Killer in the Cave Clans

In the ancient days of cave dwellers and Cro-Magnons, the time of High Sun signals a meeting between three migratory clans, the Oogs, the Boogs, and the Zoogs. They have battled for many season, but now arrive to celebrate peace and trade. However, High Sun turns to shadow when a clan member's body is found beneath the rocks. Teens will join one of these prehistoric clans and attempt to find the killer before the gathering fire burns out. Pizza, drinks, and door prizes provided.
A Story Before Time Writing Challenge
Explore the eras of pre-history by writing an original short story with challenges based on the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras. Writers will be guided by five challenges each themed around a specific time period. Writers who complete their stories will win a prize, have the opportunity to share their work on the library’s blog, and be entered to win a $50 Barnes and Noble gift card!
