The Blog Wants to Know: Aug. 2026

With temperatures in the 100s lately, it’s felt like the desert outside so that got me thinking of an idea for the next blog question!

Setting survival and communication tools aside, what would be your deserted island picks to keep you entertained while you’re stranded and waiting for rescue? You can pick one book, one movie, and one music album (ignoring the logistics of how you’d actually be able to watch or listen to these things…).

Tami, Office Manager: Music: All Over the World: The Very Best of Electric Light Orchestra (2005), Book: A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles, Movie: Singin’ in the Rain (1952)

My list shows (1) my age and (2) that I am going to need some upbeat things to survive!

Maycie, Public Support Services: I really had to think about this one! My album would be The Stranger by Billy Joel because you can neverrrrr go wrong with some Billy Joel. The Stranger has everything you need on one disc. For my book, I would probably bring Lord of the Rings (the 3-in-1 one with the bible pages) because with all the time on the island I could really pick it apart and, who knows,  maybe I’ll learn the language! I’m bringing Top Gun for my movie; it’s my fav and already my go-to plane movie so presumably I already have it with me in this situation.

Now… if Megan and I were stranded on this island together then lookout, because we’re bringing the cast recording of Hamilton and we’re putting on a two-woman show for our own entertainment!

Kristy H., Public Support Services: Book: The Island by Natasha Preston (haha!), Movie: Any Halloween movie with Michael Myers, Music: Journey

Kameron, Public Support Services: Book: Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr, Movie: Princess Bride, Album: Divide by Ed Sheeran.

Shelia, Interlibrary Loan and Cataloguing: If I were on a deserted island, I’d want the book “Where the Red Fern Grows”. No matter how many times I read it, I cry. I’d want the movie “Lonesome Dove” and the album “Frontiers” by Journey.

Alyssa, Adult and Teen Services Coordinator: I think I’d have to go with media that made me feel excited to be where I was and inspired to take advantage of the desert island vibes! For movie, I’d go with Aquamarine, a delightful mermaid classic with Jojo and Emma Roberts. For music album, I’d go with The Absence by Melody Gardot, and for book, it’s got to be Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens.

Ashley, Interlibrary Loan and Cataloguing: Book: The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, Movie: Bridget Jones’ Diary, Album: Joanne by Lady Gaga

Now it’s your turn! What would you bring to a deserted island to pass the time or keep your spirits up? Let us know in the comments below!
